God’s Timing vs My Timing: Learning to Trust the Wait
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” - Isaiah 55:8
If you're anything like me, you've probably wrestled with the frustration of waiting. We live in a fast-paced world where everything is expected to happen instantly like fast food, high-speed internet, same-day delivery. So when God asks us to wait, it can feel like we’re being ignored or forgotten.
But here's the truth: God's timing is perfect - even when it doesn't match ours.
I’ve often prayed for things I wanted now. Healing. A breakthrough. An opportunity. A restored relationship. And when nothing seemed to change, I found myself questioning, doubting, even bargaining with God. I thought: “If I do this, maybe He’ll speed things up.” But that’s not how God works. He’s not moved by pressure. He’s moved by purpose.
While I’m focused on comfort and convenience, God is focused on character and calling.
When we rush ahead of God, we often step out of alignment with His will. We settle for less. We try to force doors open that He’s gently trying to keep shut for our protection, not our punishment.
Just look at the Bible:
- Abraham and Sarah waited decades for the child God promised.
- Joseph was sold into slavery and imprisoned before stepping into his destiny.
- David was anointed king as a teenager but waited years before taking the throne.
- Even Jesus waited until He was 30 to begin His public ministry.
God uses the waiting seasons to prepare us for what He’s preparing for us.
Here’s what I’ve learned in the delay:
- Waiting reveals what’s in my heart. Am I trusting God, or just His blessings?
- Waiting teaches patience and dependence. It forces me to stop relying on my own timeline and surrender to His.
- Waiting builds faith. When the promise finally arrives, there’s no doubt who deserves the glory, God alone.
So how do we trust God's timing when everything in us wants to rush the process?
1. Stay rooted in His Word. When you're unsure of the when, go back to the who. He is faithful. Always.
2. Pray for peace, not just answers. Sometimes God gives us peace in the waiting before He gives us what we’re waiting for.
3. Celebrate progress, not just results. Every step forward even if it’s slow, is proof that He’s working.
4. Surrender control. God’s plan might not look like yours, but it’s always better.
God isn’t late. He’s not holding out on you. He sees the big picture. And sometimes the delay is the blessing.
You may not understand why He’s making you wait, but you can trust who you’re waiting on.
His timing is not only right, it's redemptive.
Let go of your timeline. Embrace His. He’s never early. Never late. Always on time.
