How to Deepen Your Christian Walk

“Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him.” - Colossians 2:7

Have you ever felt like your walk with God has plateaued?

You believe. You pray. You go to church. Maybe you’re even involved in recovery or ministry. But something feels… stuck. Dry. Like you’re circling the surface when you’re meant to dive into something much deeper.

If that’s you, you’re not alone and you’re not broken. In fact, that hunger for more is a sign of spiritual growth, not failure. It means the Holy Spirit is stirring something in you. God is inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him. The question is: Will you go?

Here are five practical (and biblical) ways to deepen your Christian walk starting right now.

 1. Make Time for God Daily

The depth of your relationship with God will often reflect the consistency of your time spent with Him. Life is busy. But you’ll never regret the time you give to God.

Try this:

  • Set aside 15–30 minutes each day for prayer, journaling, or reading the Bible.
  • Start your morning with worship music and a devotion.
  • Ask God one simple question each day: “What do You want to show me today?”

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” - James 4:8

 2. Get Rooted in the Word

The Bible isn’t just ancient literature… it’s a living, breathing Word that reveals the heart of God. You don’t need to be a theologian. Start where you are. Read slowly. Let the Word speak to your current season.

Try this:

  • Start with the Gospels, Psalms, or Proverbs.
  • Use a Bible app that offers daily plans.
  • Highlight verses that stand out and journal your thoughts.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” - Psalm 119:105

 3. Plug Into Godly Community

You weren’t designed to walk alone. God uses people to shape us, challenge us, and lift us up when we fall. Real growth happens in the context of relationship.

Try this:

  • Join a small group or Bible study.
  • Attend a recovery or men’s group (we host some amazing ones at Live Your Freedom).
  • Be honest about where you’re at. Vulnerability invites connection.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” - Proverbs 27:17

 4. Practice Spiritual Disciplines

There’s power in the quiet habits of faith. Things like fasting, worship, solitude, and journaling help us tune out the noise of the world and tune in to the voice of God.

Try this:

  • Fast from social media or food for one day.
  • Take a 30-minute prayer walk with no agenda, just listen.
  • Write a gratitude list daily.

“Train yourself to be godly.” - 1 Timothy 4:7

 5. Live Out What You Learn

A deep Christian walk isn’t about knowledge, it’s about obedience. God doesn’t want us to just memorize Scripture. He wants us to embody it.

Try this:

  • Forgive someone who hurt you.
  • Serve someone in need without expecting anything in return.
  • Love someone who’s hard to love.

“Faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” - James 2:17

 Don’t Just Skim the Surface

A deeper walk with God is about surrender, not striving. It's not about checking spiritual boxes, it’s about cultivating spiritual roots. Real intimacy with Christ happens over time, through daily decisions, and with a heart that says, “Lord, I want more of You.”

If you’re in a dry season right now, don’t give up. Keep showing up. Keep pressing in. Every seed you plant in faith will bear fruit in time.
